Tennessee Deserves a Voice Before It's Too Late
On July 10, 2026, elected District Attorney General Jimmy Dunn announced he would leave office four years before the end of his elected term, setting in motion an appointment process that will determine the future leadership of the Fourth Judicial District.
The announcement came one day after Judge Kelly Thomas questioned sworn statements Dunn made in an affidavit that had been submitted in lieu of live testimony. Judge Thomas ordered Dunn to appear in court and testify under oath on August 17, 2026.
Because Dunn's resignation was announced after the deadline to place candidates on the upcoming election ballot, Tennessee voters will not have the opportunity to elect a new District Attorney General until August 2028. Instead, Governor Bill Lee is expected to appoint someone to serve the remainder of Dunn's term.
Why This Matters
The District Attorney General plays a critical role in the criminal justice system, making decisions that impact victims, defendants, law enforcement, and communities throughout the Fourth Judicial District. With an appointment rather than an election determining who serves in this position, many Tennesseans believe it is important for citizens to make their voices heard before a decision is made.
One individual widely discussed as a potential appointee is Ronald Crockett Newcomb, Jimmy Dunn's longtime deputy.
According to publicly available records, Newcomb has been the subject of disciplinary proceedings before the Tennessee Board of Professional Responsibility regarding alleged professional misconduct. His conduct has also been challenged in litigation involving allegations concerning grand jury waiver practices while serving as Deputy Chief District Attorney General.
