Ron Newcomb Will Not Be Elected: Why Your Voice Still Matters
Governor Bill Lee will soon appoint the next District Attorney General for Tennessee's Fourth Judicial District.
Unlike a typical election, this appointment will not be decided by voters at the ballot box.
According to the No For Newcomb campaign, that makes public participation more important than ever.
Why Won't Voters Elect the Next District Attorney General?
On July 10, District Attorney General Jimmy Dunn announced his early retirement.
According to the campaign, because the retirement announcement came after the deadline to place candidates on the upcoming election ballot, voters will not have the opportunity to elect the next District
Attorney General before the office is filled.
Instead, Governor Bill Lee will appoint someone to serve until the next election in 2028.
Ron Newcomb Is Seeking the Appointment
One of the applicants under consideration is Ron Newcomb, the longtime Chief Deputy District Attorney General under Jimmy Dunn.
The No For Newcomb campaign argues that Newcomb is the least qualified candidate for the position and believes Tennessee deserves a District Attorney General who demonstrates integrity, accountability, transparency, and respect for the rule of law.
Supporters of the campaign encourage citizens to review publicly available court records, legal filings, and other information before the Governor announces his decision.
You May Not Get to Vote—But You Can Still Be Heard
Although voters will not elect the next District Attorney General, citizens still have an opportunity to participate in the appointment process by sharing their opinions directly with Governor Lee.
The campaign encourages anyone with an interest in the future of the Fourth Judicial District to make their voice heard before the appointment is announced.
