Ron Newcomb Is a Three-Ring Circus? Why the No For Newcomb Campaign Opposes His Appointment
Governor Bill Lee will soon appoint the next District Attorney General for Tennessee's Fourth Judicial District, serving Cocke, Grainger, Jefferson, and Sevier Counties. Because the current vacancy occurred after the election filing deadline, voters will not have the opportunity to elect a new District Attorney General until 2028.
One of the applicants seeking the appointment is Ron Newcomb, the longtime Chief Deputy District Attorney General under Jimmy Dunn.
The No For Newcomb campaign believes Governor Lee should appoint someone else.
Why the Campaign Opposes Ron Newcomb
According to the campaign, Ron Newcomb's record raises serious concerns about his qualifications to serve as the chief prosecutor for the Fourth Judicial District.
Supporters point to what they describe as a history that includes:
Questionable prosecution decisions.
Allegations involving conduct during official grand jury proceedings.
Frequent disagreements with judges and fellow attorneys.
Poor leadership within the District Attorney General's Office.
Vindictive and spiteful conduct toward citizens and others involved in the justice system.
The campaign argues that these issues demonstrate a pattern inconsistent with the responsibilities of a District Attorney General.
What the Office Requires
A District Attorney General is entrusted with enforcing the law fairly and impartially while maintaining the public's confidence.
According to the No For Newcomb campaign, the office requires an individual who demonstrates:
Integrity
Transparency
Accountability
Respect for Constitutional Rights
Professional Leadership
Public Trust
The campaign contends that Ron Newcomb has not demonstrated these qualities and should not receive Governor Lee's appointment.
Why This Appointment Matters
Unlike a normal election, this appointment will not be decided by voters.
Because of Jimmy Dunn's early retirement, Governor Lee will select the individual who serves as District Attorney General until voters have another opportunity to elect someone in 2028.
Supporters of the campaign believe this makes public participation especially important during the appointment process.
