Ron Newcomb Is All Wet: Why East Tennessee Needs New Leadership in the District Attorney’s Office

Aug 11
3 min read

Governor Bill Lee will soon make an important decision affecting residents throughout Sevier, Cocke, Grainger, and Jefferson Counties: who should lead Tennessee’s Fourth Judicial District as its next District Attorney General?

Ron Newcomb wants the job.

The No For Newcomb campaign believes Newcomb’s record and years of service under outgoing District Attorney General Jimmy Dunn raise serious questions about whether he is the right person to lead the office.

Ron Newcomb’s Career Under Jimmy Dunn

Ron Newcomb began serving as an assistant district attorney general in 2008 and has spent much of his prosecutorial career working under Jimmy Dunn.

Now, as Dunn prepares to leave office, Newcomb is seeking an appointment from Governor Bill Lee to become the district’s next chief prosecutor.

The No For Newcomb campaign believes appointing Newcomb would represent a continuation of the same leadership and practices that have generated controversy surrounding Dunn’s office.

East Tennessee deserves an opportunity for something different.

Serious Allegations Deserve Public Scrutiny

According to allegations raised by the No For Newcomb campaign, Newcomb’s record as a prosecutor includes controversies involving witnesses, evidence, grand jury proceedings, public records, and government accountability.

The campaign has accused Newcomb of conduct involving:

— Coercing, intimidating, and threatening witnesses

— Obstructing justice during grand jury proceedings

— Burying or withholding evidence

— Avoiding public accountability

— Participating in practices that allegedly interfered with citizens seeking access to grand juries

— Concealing or withholding public records the campaign contends document misconduct within the District

Attorney General’s Office

These are serious allegations involving an individual seeking one of the most powerful positions in Tennessee’s criminal justice system.

Allegations should not be treated as criminal convictions or judicial findings of guilt. Residents should examine the underlying court orders, transcripts, legal filings, public records, and other available documentation when evaluating these claims and Newcomb’s qualifications.

Public Accountability Matters

A District Attorney General exercises tremendous prosecutorial discretion.

The office determines which cases are prosecuted, how cases are handled, and how the government exercises its authority against people accused of crimes.

That power demands more than experience.

The next District Attorney General should demonstrate integrity, independence, sound judgment, transparency, respect for constitutional rights, and accountability to the public.

The No For Newcomb campaign believes the controversies surrounding Newcomb make him the wrong choice for that responsibility.

Does East Tennessee Need New Leadership?

Newcomb has spent years working within Jimmy Dunn’s administration. Now he wants to take over the office Dunn is leaving behind.

The question for residents is simple:

Should the Fourth Judicial District continue with leadership from within the existing administration, or is it time for someone new?

No For Newcomb believes the answer is clear.

WE NEED NEW LEADERSHIP.

The next District Attorney General will serve communities throughout:

Sevier County • Cocke County • Grainger County • Jefferson County

Every resident of those counties has an interest in ensuring the office is led by someone who can earn and maintain public confidence.

Governor Bill Lee Will Make the Decision

Governor Bill Lee will determine who receives the appointment.

That means residents concerned about Ron Newcomb’s candidacy should make their opinions known before the decision is announced.

Your voice can still be heard.
