Ron Newcomb Is a Joke? Why East Tennessee Should Examine His Record Before the Next DA Appointment

Aug 7
3 min read

As Governor Bill Lee considers who should serve as the next District Attorney General for Tennessee’s Fourth Judicial District, residents of Sevier, Cocke, Grainger, and Jefferson Counties have an important question to consider:

Should Ron Newcomb be trusted to lead the District Attorney General’s Office?

Career prosecutor Ron Newcomb has applied for the position. The No For Newcomb campaign strongly opposes his appointment and believes his record under outgoing District Attorney General Jimmy Dunn deserves careful public examination.

Ron Newcomb Wants to Be the Next District Attorney General

Newcomb has spent years serving in the District Attorney General’s Office under Jimmy Dunn. Now, he is seeking an opportunity to lead that same office.

The District Attorney General possesses enormous authority. Prosecutors make decisions that can affect the freedom, reputation, finances, and futures of individuals and families throughout East Tennessee.

That authority requires integrity, sound judgment, transparency, respect for constitutional rights, and accountability.

The No For Newcomb campaign believes Newcomb’s record raises serious questions about whether he meets those standards.

Serious Allegations Surrounding Ron Newcomb’s Record

According to allegations advanced by the No For Newcomb campaign, Newcomb’s conduct as a prosecutor has included controversies involving grand jury proceedings, witnesses, evidence, public records, and the exercise of prosecutorial authority.

The campaign has accused Newcomb of conduct involving:

  • Obstructing justice during grand jury proceedings

  • Threatening witnesses with prosecution if they testified

  • Coaching law enforcement officers and witnesses

  • Burying evidence alleged to demonstrate the innocence of accused individuals

  • Retaliating against perceived enemies

  • Abusing his authority as a prosecutor

  • Violating his oath of office

  • Contributing to employees leaving the District Attorney General’s Office

  • Denying public access to records the campaign alleges document misconduct within the office

These are serious allegations.

Allegations should not be confused with criminal convictions or established judicial findings. Residents evaluating Newcomb should examine the underlying public records, court filings, transcripts, legal proceedings, and other available documentation supporting or disputing these claims.

Questions About Grand Jury Proceedings

Grand jury proceedings have become an especially important part of the controversy surrounding Newcomb and the Dunn administration.

The No For Newcomb campaign alleges that practices within the District Attorney General’s Office interfered with citizens attempting to provide information or testimony to grand juries.

These allegations deserve scrutiny because prosecutors occupy a uniquely powerful position within the criminal justice system.

Citizens should be able to expect prosecutors to exercise that authority fairly, lawfully, and without allowing personal or political considerations to interfere with the administration of justice.

What About Public Records and Transparency?

Transparency is another central issue raised by the campaign.

No For Newcomb has repeatedly challenged what it describes as efforts to prevent public access to documents concerning practices within the District Attorney General’s Office.

Public confidence depends heavily upon accountability.

When questions arise about the conduct of government officials, access to lawful public records can help citizens understand what happened and reach informed conclusions for themselves.

The campaign believes the controversies surrounding these records should be considered before Newcomb is given even greater authority.

Is This the Leadership East Tennessee Needs?

The next District Attorney General will serve communities throughout the Fourth Judicial District of Tennessee, including:

Sevier County • Cocke County • Grainger County • Jefferson County

This appointment is bigger than one prosecutor or one controversy.

The person leading the office will oversee criminal prosecutions and influence how justice is administered throughout the district.

The No For Newcomb campaign believes the next District Attorney General should demonstrate:

Integrity. Independence. Transparency. Accountability. Sound judgment. Respect for constitutional rights. Respect for crime victims. Public trust.

The campaign does not believe Ron Newcomb has demonstrated the qualities necessary to lead the office.

You May Not Get to Vote, But You Can Be Heard

Residents will not directly choose the immediate replacement for Jimmy Dunn at the ballot box. Governor Bill Lee will make the appointment.

That does not mean East Tennesseans have to remain silent.

Residents concerned about Newcomb’s potential appointment can contact Governor Lee and express their opinions before a decision is made.
