Ron Newcomb Has Applied for District Attorney General: Why the No For Newcomb Campaign Is Asking Governor Lee to Choose Someone Else
Governor Bill Lee is now reviewing applications to appoint the next District Attorney General for Tennessee's Fourth Judicial District following Jimmy Dunn's announced retirement. Because the retirement occurred after the election filing deadline, the Governor's appointment—not a public election—will determine who serves until voters have the opportunity to elect a District Attorney General in 2028.
According to the No For Newcomb Campaign, Ron Newcomb has submitted an application for the appointment. The campaign is urging Governor Lee to select another qualified applicant after reviewing Newcomb's public record.
Why the Appointment Matters - No For Newcomb
The Office of the District Attorney General is one of the most influential positions in Tennessee's criminal justice system. The individual appointed will oversee criminal prosecutions throughout the Fourth Judicial District, serving:
Cocke County
Grainger County
Jefferson County
Sevier County
The campaign argues that the person selected should possess integrity, sound judgment, professionalism, transparency, and the confidence of both the courts and the public.
The Campaign's Concerns
According to the No For Newcomb Campaign, Ron Newcomb's record raises concerns that should be considered before an appointment is made.
The campaign alleges that Ron Newcomb:
Is not respected by many within the legal community.
Has been criticized by judges in court proceedings.
Lacks the leadership qualities necessary to supervise other prosecutors.
Has not demonstrated sufficient transparency with the courts or the public.
Should not be appointed as District Attorney General.
The campaign encourages citizens to review publicly available court records, legal filings, judicial opinions, and official documents when evaluating the qualifications of any applicant.
The Timing of Jimmy Dunn's Retirement
The campaign also points to the circumstances surrounding Jimmy Dunn's retirement announcement.
According to the campaign, on July 9, Judge Kelly Thomas questioned sworn statements made by Jimmy Dunn in a public records case and ordered Dunn to testify under oath on August 17.
The following day, July 10, Dunn announced that he would end his eight-year term four years early.
Because the retirement occurred after the filing deadline for the current election cycle, Governor Bill Lee will appoint the next District Attorney General rather than voters selecting one through the ballot box until the next scheduled election in 2028.
The campaign argues that this makes public participation in the appointment process especially important.
