RON NEWCOMB: Candidate for District Attorney General — Why the Campaign Says Tennessee Voters Should Pay Attention
RON NEWCOMB Is Seeking Appointment as District Attorney General
Governor Bill Lee is currently reviewing applicants to fill the position of District Attorney General for Tennessee's Fourth Judicial District, which serves Cocke, Grainger, Jefferson, and Sevier Counties.
One of those applicants is Ron Newcomb, longtime Chief Deputy District Attorney General under Jimmy Dunn.
The No For Newcomb campaign believes Tennessee residents deserve to understand the public record and the allegations surrounding a candidate seeking one of the most powerful law enforcement positions in East Tennessee.
According to the Campaign, Ron Newcomb Has a Record That Raises Serious Questions
According to the campaign, Ron Newcomb:
Violated his Oath of Office.
Was investigated by the Tennessee Board of Professional Responsibility for alleged violations of the Rules of Professional Conduct.
Was reported for alleged crimes committed during official grand jury proceedings.
Played a central role in grand jury practices the campaign contends deprived citizens of constitutional protections.
The campaign believes these issues deserve careful consideration before any appointment is made.
The May 1, 2023 Indictment
According to the campaign, events surrounding May 1, 2023 illustrate why public accountability matters.
The campaign alleges that after citizen Erik Cooper submitted written notice of his intention to seek grand jury consideration of alleged crimes committed during March 27, 2023 grand jury proceedings, Ron Newcomb and Jimmy Dunn used that information to pursue an indictment against Cooper.
The campaign further states that the written application used in this process was later declared unlawful by Judge Rex Ogle.
Allegations Regarding Grand Jury Practices
The campaign alleges that Ron Newcomb used information obtained through the unlawful application to:
Learn why citizens intended to appear before the grand jury.
Investigate the allegations before witnesses testified.
Form his own legal conclusions regarding those allegations.
Present his legal opinions to grand jurors without disclosing what the campaign describes as a conflict of interest.
According to the campaign, these practices continued for many years and affected numerous citizens who attempted to exercise their constitutional rights before grand juries.
Why This Matters
The District Attorney General is responsible for enforcing the law fairly and impartially.
The campaign believes that office requires a prosecutor who demonstrates:
Integrity
Accountability
Independence
Respect for constitutional rights
Sound legal judgment
Public confidence
According to the campaign, Ron Newcomb has not demonstrated those qualities and should not be appointed to lead the Fourth Judicial District.
Governor Lee Will Make the Decision
Unlike an elected race, the current vacancy will be filled by appointment.
Governor Bill Lee will select the next District Attorney General.
Because the appointment process is already underway, the campaign encourages citizens to make their opinions known before a final decision is made.
