Governor Bill Lee is expected to appoint the next District Attorney General for Tennessee's Fourth Judicial District, which serves Cocke, Grainger, Jefferson, and Sevier Counties. Because Jimmy Dunn announced his retirement after the filing deadline for the upcoming election, voters will not have the opportunity to elect a new District Attorney General until 2028.
The No For Newcomb Campaign is urging Tennesseans to review publicly available information before the appointment is made.
Ron Newcomb Is a Candidate for Appointment
According to the campaign, Ron Newcomb is among the individuals being considered by Governor Bill Lee to replace outgoing District Attorney General Jimmy Dunn.
The campaign argues that appointing Newcomb would continue the same leadership that has governed the Fourth Judicial District for many years and encourages citizens to carefully examine the public record before an appointment is made.
Jimmy Dunn's Early Retirement
On July 10, Jimmy Dunn announced he would retire before completing his elected term.
The announcement came one day after Judge Kelly Thomas questioned sworn statements contained in an affidavit Dunn submitted in lieu of live testimony and ordered him to appear in court to testify under oath.
According to the campaign, Dunn has been ordered to testify regarding disputed documents connected to grand jury proceedings and a public records lawsuit.
Because Dunn's retirement occurred after the election filing deadline, Governor Bill Lee will appoint someone to complete the remainder of the term.
Why the Appointment Matters
The Governor's appointment will determine who serves as District Attorney General until Tennessee voters can elect a successor in 2028.
The No For Newcomb Campaign believes this decision will have a lasting impact on the administration of justice throughout:
Cocke County
Grainger County
Jefferson County
Sevier County
The campaign encourages Tennesseans to review publicly available court records, legal filings, judicial orders, and official documents related to the appointment process and make informed decisions.
