Jimmy Dunn's Early Retirement and the Appointment of Tennessee's Next District Attorney General

On July 10, District Attorney General Jimmy Dunn announced that he would leave office four years before the end of his elected eight-year term.
According to the No For Newcomb Campaign, the timing of Dunn's announcement has significant consequences for Tennessee voters.
The Timing of the Retirement - Jimmy Dunn
The campaign notes that Jimmy Dunn announced his retirement one day after a court questioned sworn statements contained in an affidavit he submitted and ordered him to testify under oath on August 17.
Because Dunn announced his retirement after the filing deadline for candidates to appear on the upcoming election ballot, the campaign argues that voters will not have the opportunity to elect the next District Attorney General during the current election cycle.
Instead, Governor Bill Lee will appoint someone to complete the remainder of Dunn's term.
The next election for the office will not occur until August 2028.
Why This Matters
District Attorney General is one of the most influential offices in Tennessee's criminal justice system.
The Governor's appointment will determine who leads the Fourth Judicial District for the remainder of the current term, affecting residents throughout:
Cocke County
Grainger County
Jefferson County
Sevier County
The No For Newcomb Campaign believes this decision should receive public attention and encourages citizens to review publicly available court records, legal filings, and official documents related to the appointment process.
